Use lint early and often.Gimpel Software's PCLint and FlexeLint are, IMHO, the gold standard for static analysis where the goal is bug fixing and cleaning out questionable code. An option where the intent of the analysis is aimed more at helping the maintenance programmer (who may also be the original programmer six months later, of course) is Crystal Flow from SGV Sarc. Tools for mapping out the program flow, call trees, etc. Haven't tried klocwork's Insight, so no opinion there.
