STM32 Clock Frequency Discrepency

I opened the STM3120E-EVAL.hzp solution which contains projects for testing STM32 peripherals.    The project properties  show the Oscillator Frequency as 8MHz but the system_stm32f10x.c contains a list of #defines, one of which is to be un-commented.  8MHz is not shown in the list, it goes from 24MHz to 72MHz.  Please advise, thank you.

  8MHz is the crystal oscillator frequency, not the frequency the CPU runs at.

  What does setting a value in the project properties affect? If I can change the actual operating frequency to whatever I like, where does the project setting get used for anything?

  It doesn't do anything - it will be removed from the next CPU support package release.
