Or an option that would highlight or shade the first 31 characters of an identifier.
When I'm making up new identifiers for enums (e.g. command IDs from a datasheet), I like to ensure that I don't go over the 31 unique character rule, so that the code is portable to older compilers. Modern compilers tend to support many more than 31 unique characters, so don't give a warning.
I usually I end up counting the number of characters up to 31 just to be sure.
I just think it would be useful if the IDE had a way to quickly show how many characters were in the identifier that is being typed or that the cursor is over, perhaps discretely in the status bar. Or at least, somehow unobtrusively highlight the first 31 characters.
